Crowle Peatland Railway

The railway was formed to preserve the history and heritage of the Humberhead Peatlands.

Welcome to CRowle Peatland Railway

Peat extraction on the Crowle and Thorne Moors dates back to medieval times, shaping the landscape and local heritage for centuries. In the 19th century, industrial-scale harvesting led to the creation of a unique network of 3ft gauge horse-drawn railways, threading through the moorland. By the 1950s and 60s, these tracks saw a new era as locomotives gradually replaced horses—marking a fascinating chapter in peatland transport history.

Our Rolling stock

Crowle Peatland Railway is home to a fascinating collection of narrow-gauge locomotives and vehicles that once played a vital role in transporting peat from the moors to the processing mills. Highlights include our lovingly restored Simplex locomotive, Little Peat, and the powerful diesel-hydraulic Schöma engines introduced in the 1990s to modernise peat haulage.

Our collection also features a rare Wagonmaster locomotive, formerly used on the Bord na Móna peat railways in Ireland, and a historic Wickham Trolley originally built for the 3ft gauge Lochaber Railway in Scotland—each piece offering a unique glimpse into the industrial heritage of peatland transport.

Whether you’re a railway enthusiast or simply curious about local history, our rolling stock brings the story of the moors to life. Click the links below to explore each vehicle in more detail.
